What Is A Hiking Backpack?

Hiking trips can last for a whole day. So, you need to carry important items such as food, water, equipment, clothing and so on. To carry all these items, you need a backpack. Therefore, in layman’s term, a hiking backpack is a backpack that can be used to carry items while you’re hiking. There are certain features that are needed for a backpack to classify as a hiking backpack. The backpacks have a range of fits, design, built and pricing. There are also many types of hiking backpacks and each of them has its own purpose.

How To Choose A Hiking Backpack

How To Choose A Hiking Backpack?

Let us now come back to the question in hand. How to choose a hiking backpack? Well, the simple way is to weigh in the features. Do a cost-benefit analysis and buy the one that fits your budget. But let’s not get that technical so, we’re going to see some basic things to look after before choosing a hiking backpack.

Find your Fit and Need

The first thing you need to do is try out a bunch of backpacks and see which one is the perfect fit for you. You won’t want to choose an overnight pack for a 3-hour hike.

Capacity

Get the one with the capacity that really complements your items that you’d take on a hike. The capacity of backpacks is denoted in liters. A normal backpack has a 40-liter capacity. Go for it!

Access

Access is important. Backpacks having good access facilities like reachable compartments, water bladders and belt pockets are always great. They’ll considerably increase your hiking speed.

Build Quality, Features, and Price

The final thing that you’d want to do is judge the build quality of the backpack. See what kind of features and capacity it has and then based on your budget, make a decision. Also, keep in mind that not all backpacks that seem good are good. You should check for the padding material, the frame sheet material as well as the pocket materials. Getting a backpack with a warranty is another thing you can do.

Different Types of Hiking Backpack

As far as the types are concerned, hiking backpacks are differentiated in accordance with the size, material, and design.

Size

There are quite a few size options. A small sized backpack can be used to carry hydration bladders, a few clothes, and a few basic gears. These backpacks are light and easier to carry. A slightly large, let’s say medium sized backpacks are used to carry things that you might need in a single day. They’re also known as day packs. The next one is a large sized backpack, they’re referred to as Overnight packs and they allow you to carry things such as water, food, clothing gear, sleeping gear, equipment etc. They’re meant for a long hiking trip. There are also specialized backpacks for skiing or rock climbing.

Material And Design

The material used in a backpack can vary significantly. First of all, small packs usually have a frameless design with soft foams. Since they’re meant for a relatively short distance, they also don’t have much capacity. A heavier pack will have plastic sewn frame sheet for more rigidity and they can take heavier loads as well. As far as the overnight backpack goes, they’re very strong and very heavy. Built with aluminum, these backpacks can comfortably withstand a load of over 20 pounds.

Frame

In addition to the above categories, the frame also determines what kind of backpack a certain one is. There are three kinds of backpacks with frame design in mind:

  • Frameless Backpacks: These backpacks have a flexible construction. They’re very light. The build is of 40-liter capacity which weighs less than 0.6 kgs. The one downside is that these backpacks don’t have a build to withstand heavy loads. This is, however, the plus point too. Because of the fact that it doesn’t have solid construction, they’re very suitable for hiking on a steep hill or ascents that require more strength. Low weight can definitely help here.

  • External-frame backpacks: These backpacks are used rarely these days. The primary reason being the weight. They’re heavy, bulky and aren’t something that you would want to take on a really long hiking trip. The load support is excellent. The backpack can take a 50 liter+ load but can weigh around 2 kgs. The main advantage of an external frame backpack is that they can fit anyone, the fit is customizable. The frames can also be replaced or removed with lighter ones but that will decrease the load bearing capability too. It’s really about finding the right balance here.

Hiking backpack

Hiking backpacks come with comfort in mind. You wouldn’t want to take a backpack that hurts your shoulders. Also, a major load will also sit on your hip for internal and external frame backpacks. Some backpacks also come with padded shoulder straps for more comfort.

Air Flow

Sweat can indeed be a problem. Avoiding a sweaty back wearing an internal framed hiking backpack is just a real problem. Although the sweaty back isn’t something that can be avoided fully it can be reduced with a proper ventilation system. Most backpacks have this air flow mechanism integrated into the back. Breathable Mesh are also common and they’re very helpful.

Pockets

  • Pockets in the hip belt. These are extremely important. They’re close to access and they have quite a good place to keep items such as GPS and Cell Phones.
  • Side Pockets are common. Most backpacks have it. They’re there for you to keep a bottle of water or anything else that you might need.
  • Front Pockets are the pockets with a zipper or a buckle closure. You can keep a map or a dry jacket on a front pocket. There are even pockets inside pockets and they’re just a sweet deal. Some pockets are also waterproof pockets that help you even more.
  • The final kind of pocket is the lid pocket that is small & best for storing items like gloves and flashlights.

Hydration

Some backpacks also come with a hydration pack that has a hose connected to a water bladder. It’s a convenient way to store water and the water can be accessed faster too.

These are some features that are essential. Some other features that you can look into are a Sleeping bag compartment, rain covers, straps, hooks and loops, removable daypacks etc These features aren’t that important but it is a huge bonus if you find a backpack with them.

Conclusion

Despite sounding like a child’s play, choosing a correct backpack for hiking can be quite a bit tricky. It is not difficult if you know what to look for and what are available options. Mainly, there are 3 kinds of backpacks, you need to go for the one that suits your needs. Get the one that fits you, has the required capacity. See how the access is and the extra features included. The build quality is also important and finally, get the one with the most affordable pricing.

How To Pack A Backpack With Clothes [Proper Guide]

Backpacking may seem like a trivial matter. What we mean, who doesn’t know how to put their clothes in a backpack, right? Well, we guess everyone knows it but not everyone knows it properly! There is a huge difference between packing random clothes to go over your friend’s house for a sleepover and packing for camping or a hunting trip. Why Proper Packing Plan is Necessary for Backpacks?

Consider this, you have a fairly small backpack that you want to take on a trip. You look at the clothes and the gears you have and suddenly, it doesn’t seem like you can take all your belongings for the trip. In this situation, proper backpack planning is crucial. The space on your backpack and the number of gear you have will definitely require a strategy here. And this is where we come in.

How to Pack a Backpack With Clothes?

Packing a backpack with clothes is actually an art form. And today, we’re going to go over some methods.

Step 1: Folding Clothes

Packing clothes

  • The first thing is to fold shirts as they’re the primary outfit. The best technique is the army roll. Just lay the shirt on a table and turn the bottom 6 inches. Ensure that this section is flat. Now you should take the left side of the shirt and fold it toward the center. Now fold the sleeve back. After the shirt is folded, start rolling it. For rolling the shirt, take the collar and roll it up. This keeps the clothes compact but it can wrinkle the cloth more than traditional folding.
  • The next thing is the socks. You should always roll the socks in small bundles. Fold the top end of the sock back on itself for 2 inches. Then from the toes, roll them.
  • The underwear is the next item on the list. The underwears should be rolled from the inverted waistband and the edges should be folded towards the middle. Roll the underwear’s bottom up to the top of the waistband into a compact bundle.
  • Store the shirt, and socks in one bundle. For this, lay out your shirt, put the socks and the underwear over it and then gradually fold the shirt. This will save a whole lot of space.
  • If you’re a girl, the skirt should be folded in a way to avoid wrinkles. Rolling a skirt can be a bit tricky, so you should fold it in half in a way that it’s safe from wrinkles.
  • Just like skirts, pants and shorts should also not be rolled. They should instead be folded. Hold them by their waistband and fold them in the back pocket to back pocket way. There’s nothing fancy on the fold. Just fold them in the usual way.
  • If you’re a lazy guy who doesn’t really want to fold clothes manually then use a cloth folder. A cloth folder is generally a semi-automatic folder which required minimum labor It will significantly decrease your packing time. For instance, you can just lay a shirt down on the folding board and fold every sector of the shirt separately for a whole fold.

Step 2: Storing Clothes

sorting clothes

  • Perform a weight sort of all your items. Do this sorting from lightest to heaviest. Lay them out from left to right. Do remember to pack everything you need though. It will be really annoying if you miss an item.
  • The soles of your shoes is a really good place to store small items. It is also a place where there is an extra layer of protection for items. You can easily store rolled socks and underwear. Doing this will make sure you have more space on your backpack for other items.
  • The storage strategy is light item first while the heavy item goes last. So, you should put all the lighter items like sleeping bags and spare shoes that you won’t have to access frequently at first, on the bottom of the backpack.
  • The backpack’s center is where you want to keep all the camping equipment so they’re easier to retrieve. Stuff like camping gears and small electronics can go here. These times will be cushioned perfectly with the lighter items down and the clothes up.
  • Finally, all the items that have considerable weight go at the top of the bag. Since the top of the backpack is the easiest to access, you need to put every day to day items on the top like jackers, umbrellas etc.

Step 3: Organization

  • The final step is to organize the backpack. For this, get the correct backpack first. There are different backpacks that have various functions which depend on your needs. Get a waterproof backpack on a hiking trip. Traveling for a long time will require you to get a backpack that has many spaces both outside and inside. It also should have a good deal of padding to safeguard it from protection. For a sleepover, a normal backpack with the packing tips that we gave is more than enough.
  • For camping, get a compression dry bag that will protect the backpack from all sorts of weather conditions.
  • Use packing cubes for clothes. Packing cubes can help you pack items separately and then put it in the backpack. It helps with easy retrieval.
  • For liquids and other items like toilet paper and hand sanitizers, store them on outer pockets. You don’t want to ruin your clothes with water now, would you?

How To Fit Everything Into Your Backpack?

The trick to fitting everything into your backpack is to get a backpack that supports all your items. Often times people have a lot of items that they want to carry but the backpack isn’t large enough. No matter how many tricks you apply, it’s not going to get you anywhere unless you have a reasonably sized backpack for your items.

Having said that, there are certain headstarts that we can definitely give you to help you tackle this problem.

  • It’s not just possible. Make sure to know this, my friend. “Everything” is a very vague term and it is literally impossible to store everything. So, the first heads up is to get a backpack that fits you. Sizes are measured in the liters a pack can hold, getting a high storage backpack is always a win situation.
  • Suitcase type backpacks generally store more than the zipper type backpacks. But Zipper type is more favored when you’re a climber.
  • Make use of all the spaces. As obvious as it may sound, you need to take advantage of every nook and corner of your backpack.
  • The final thing to take care of is to use the outer area properly. Many backpacks have outer pockets for storing water. Also, you can buy extensions that increase the space of your backpack thus allowing you to store many things. Do remember to get a backpack that is lightweight though. You shouldn’t sacrifice comfort for space.

Caution While Packing Your Backpack

Well, there are quite a few cautions that you should take while packing your backpack. These are some trivial matters but they’re still crucial.

  • Remember to pack everything you need. Often times, people just forget at least one item from their lists. Don’t be like that. Try to remember everything.
  • Don’t mix clothes with water. Never store water bottle on the space where your clothes are. Store them separately.
  • Make sure all the zippers are locked properly, you don’t want to lose items from your backpack.
  • If your backpack isn’t weatherproof, carry a raincoat perhaps. This will be handy in case of emergencies.
  • Use a case to store electronics. You don’t want your precious smartphone to be all broken. In addition, don’t keep your electronics with water.
  • Backpacks are specific. Don’t use a school going backpack on a camping trip. That just doesn’t work. Also, get a backpack with good quality. There are some reasonably priced options available for purchase.

Don’t go for the one which looks nice but for the one that suits your needs. As far as the “Don’t Do’s” are concerned, never mix water with clothes and electronics. Osprey Farpoint 40 Review

As discussed above, if you are looking for a backpack that gives you a lot of space, easy to carry and an easy to carry a backpack, then without even giving a second thought, Osprey Farpoint 40 is one of the best options that you have now. This backpack has already comforted thousands of users so far in their camping and hiking endeavors. Let’s look at the features that it has to offer:

Osprey Packs Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Medium/Large
645 Reviews
Osprey Packs Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Medium/Large
  • Large panel zip access to main compartment
  • Lockable sliders on main compartment zipper
  • Stowaway backpanel, harness and hipbelt with zippered rear flap for protection
  • Laptop and tablet sleeve secure in lockable compartment
  • Two internal compression straps hold contents securely

Size Options

Osprey Farpoint 40 is an excellent hiking and camping backpack that comes in various sizes from small to medium and a medium to large variation. So, being a guy of a height of 5’9”, we decided to opt for the medium-large variation. This means there is more about your torso size. The taller you are, you might want to go for the medium/large. Our recommendation is that if you’re about 5’5” height or maybe a bit shorter, you should get the small-medium size.

Compactness

We’ve had 10 months of actual travel with this particular travel bag. We can tell you about our experience as to how well it served us. We really love the fact that it’s very compact. Usually, the overhead compartments of a lot of various airlines are really small and this backpack fits very well there.

Material

Osprey Farpoint 40 offers a lot of comfort because of the breathability. This backpack features a mesh material on the back of the backpack and actually surrounding the entire frame of the backpack. The frame of the backpack is a fit aluminum frame that really gives a lot of support and helps disperse the weight. Moreover, it provides support through the bag & gives you a lot of comfort by having this on your back.

Shoulder Straps

One thing that’s really nice about this backpack as well are the straps. It is slightly padded to give you more comfort and more support on your shoulders. It has some little tabs to help you tighten and to find the right fit on your shoulders depending on the size of your shoulders. So, you can set the backpack a little bit higher or lower just to give it that nice snug fit.

Hip Belt

This backpack has a really cool padded hip belt that covered in the same mesh material as the entire back of the back pipe. This hip belt allows to add more comfort, stability and transfer some of the weight off your shoulders onto your waist.

Chest Strap

Another neat feature of Osprey Farpoint 40 is the chest strap. You can put on your chest and tie in to give you more support as you need it.

Carry Handles

In terms of versatility, you also have a bunch of carrying options such as this top handle and also a handle on the side. These handles are pretty durable, pretty tough and these feel very secure on the bag. This means that you don’t actually have to always carry on your back. You can hold the backpack in a briefcase style or hold it right on top as well. So, you have various options on how you want to actually carry your backpack and take out a covering to hide your straps and the hip hatch. In these ways, it is kind of converted into a strapless bag that is actually very helpful if you want to check in your bag.

The straps don’t actually don’t dangle so they don’t get caught in something. That’s really very helpful. Another cool feature of the bag’s strap is that you can attach to the bag itself to some designated points. It will transform your backpack into now a shoulder bag. We hope you got an idea that you have a lot of options of how you want to actually carry your bag depending on what current situation you’re in.

Front Straps

On the front of the backpack, you have these straps that you can use to secure your backpack. This particular backpack from Osprey is front-top-loading as opposed to some other backpacks that we researched. If you have to take out any item from the bag, you know you can easily open it up to pull your stuff out and put it right back in.

Pockets

There are two mesh pockets. We found it particularly helpful for carrying water bottles or other kinds of beverages. However, there is no zipper of any kind here, so it is not smart to put any valuables or any loose items there. Also, there is a pocket that we found really helpful for putting in loose changes and also pens.

Storage

One of the other main compartments or the bag itself is kind of a laptop pouch or, maybe a technology storage area of the bag. You can easily fit a 15-inch laptop and there is even a velcro strap to secure that. There’s a pouch where you can put in various accessories such as a mouse, wires, batteries, hard disks etc. It is padded which ensures of keeping the electrical equipment in a good shape. On top of that, you’ve just got the extra storage that you can put right on top.

Now let’s talk about the main storage compartment of the bag itself. You will get a lot of space and you will have these security straps that you can put over your clothes as you pack to provide extra support and stability for your items. On the front side of the bag, you have a nice mesh compartment with a nice mesh liner. It has travel cues where you can put underwear, socks etc. The only major problem that we really had was with a laptop compartment. When the bag gets really fully packed, the laptop is really snug in there and you may feel a little bit uncomfortable thinking about the safety of my laptop in terms of defending perhaps. What you can do is just take a laptop, put in two sleeves and slide it in the main compartment with the rest of your clothes.

To Sum Up

Considering these features, now you know nothing really too negative for this particular bag but other than that it’s a very solid and worthy investment. As far as the product upgrade is concerned, there’s a newer version of the Osprey Farpoint 40 liter bag out there. The new version is pretty much the same as this one. This is definitely a worthy investment and is too awesome in terms of price as this costs about $140.

For your adventurous tours, today we’re going to discuss the capacity of 30L backpacks which are also perfect for traveling and even for hiking and trekking. Is that true? Yes, it is! Many people are traveling for nine months with only a 30L backpack. Also a 30L big is up to 1800 cubic inches which are considered as a medium backpack in the backpack industry.

Confident enough? So, let’s get started then!

how big is a 30 liter backpack

How Big Is a 30 Liter Backpack

When it comes to dimension and measurement, the first thing comes to our mind is Mathematics. We are not that good at it. We guess you’re also not here a scientific lecture. So, it’s not going to be a harsh conversation about measurement and dimensions, but we’ll tell you everything in detail. Before that, we have a guideline for you which will help you to get a perfect backpack.

Now before getting a backpack of 30L or more than that you’ve to consider some points. Which are-

  • Torso length: After knowing your torso length, always try to get a backpack which is equal to your torso or lesser than it. Don’t get a backpack which is bigger than your torso size, and it’s very uncomfortable.
  • Tour length: Always consider it first. If you’re going for a month, and you have a lot to carry, then you have to get something bigger, but if you’re going for a day only then, you don’t need a big backpack. So, always think about how many days you are going to stay then purchase according to it.
  • Items: The last and one of the most crucial point is, how many things you’re carrying with you. If you pack too much for a long trip, then you may need a big backpack, but if you’re not taking too many things, then you have to go for the opposite one.

For buying an ideal and best backpack, you’ve to consider all these points.

So, what about the 30L backpack sizes?

Undoubtedly, there are many 30L backpacks available with different dimensions. Now which sizes backpack you should get? Well, it entirely depends on your age, gender and chest length.

Fun Fact: Why all the backpacks measured with liters? Well, the liter is a common term we use for measuring milk, water, etc. So, the unit “liter” easy to remember. For this reason, the manufactures measure in cubic inches then they converted it into liter.

Mostly, a 30L backpack has a length of around 48-53 cm and width of 25-30 cm. According to us, it can carry around 3 to 4 pounds smoothly. These backpacks are quite spacious too because in depth it has about 27-30 cm space. So, you can quickly go on a trip of a few days with it.

As the dimension has been explained. Let’s talk about the size of it. We don’t think that we have to talk about it. Just check the fun fact. The size of an ideal 30L backpack is up to 1800 cubic inches. So, it isn’t small at all. We hope, we didn’t bore you with the measurement. If you are still bored, then let’s move to something more interesting.

What Fits In a 30L Backpack?

Forgiving you a proper knowledge regarding this section, we think we should share a story with you. It’s a story of our college friend Eric who travelled to India for six months with only a 30L backpack.

According to him, he was carrying a backpack which is Osprey Pack’s backpack. He found two things helpful about the backpacks which are-

  1. Its hip strap (which makes it comfortable while hiking too)
  2. The bag’s opening and closing system. It opens like a suitcase, so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable every time you open it.

Now, let’s see what he carried on it:

  • T-shirts: 8 T-shirts which were sporty, quick-drying and odor resistant. Three t-shirts were the full sleeve and made for winter or cold places like Manali and Darjeeling.
  • Pants: He took three jeans pants, two chinos, three shorts and one jogger for a six-month tour.
  • Shirt: He made four shirts in it.
  • Jacket: For cold places, he carried one leather jacket and one heavy hoodie with him.
  • Shoes: Two running shoes and one woodland boot for hiking and a pair of the flip-flop.
  • Accessories: He also carried two watches (in boxes), two sunglasses (in boxes), six underwear and four pairs of socks.
  • Perfume and other toiletries: Two bottles of perfume, soap, trimmer and a 350 ML shampoo.
  • One [easyazon_link identifier=”B071WLXKB2″ locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”ish0f7-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]MacBook Pro with charger[/easyazon_link]
  • One [easyazon_link identifier=”B016PT10XA” locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”ish0f7-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]iPad mini with charger[/easyazon_link]
  • One iPhone 7s matt black with charger
  • One headphone
  • One [easyazon_link identifier=”B00I1CPA0O” locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”ish0f7-20″ cart=”y” localize=”y” popups=”y”]Nikon D5300[/easyazon_link]
  • Towel
  • Two water bottles
  • Pen and dairy
  • One backpack cover: For protecting the bag from rain and dust.

So, it was his small list of items he carried on a 30L backpack comfortably for six months. As Eric said, the small backpack made his journey too easy. So we hope now you can assume how much you can carry on it. Also, let us know in the comment box if you have any experience like this.

Buyer’s Guide to Best Travel Backpacks

When you are in the market looking to purchase a backpack, you need to consider looking at several aspects to find out the best backpacking backpacks for travel. We did the same to enlist the above mentioned 12 backpacks among several dozens of popular backpacks available in the market. Here are some of the major aspects you need to look for while choosing the best travel backpacks.

The rucksack containing Detachable Backpack

If you are looking for a flexible option, there’s no better option than going for one with a removable daypack. You might want to go for a smaller backpack too. But, if you get a rucksack containing detachable backpack, you’d be able to store the smaller backpack as well as onto the larger backpack while traveling.

If you get this kind of backpack, you’d be able to store all of your appliances such as laptops, camera gears and other valuable items in the smaller backpack and store it in the larger one securely.

Compression Straps

Getting a backpack containing a compression strap (or straps) is one of the best things you can ever do while choosing the best backpack. With these straps, you can clip and tighten your materials inside the backpack for a better compression.

You can look for any of the backpacks mentioned above to get these straps. Some backpacks also include these straps at the exterior part which means you’d be able to perform a dual compression so that you can offer better balance and comfort to your shoulders and back.

Stowaway Harness

Getting a backpack with this feature is really important since airline and bus managers simply slam and stack your backpack into the bins or storage space without being sure about breakable contents in your backpack. When this happens, it is likely to have the rips, buckles, and straps of your backpack to break down eventually.

If you want to prevent this sort of damage, you can just get a backpack with this feature to zip away the shoulder straps as well as hip-belt.

Multiple Compartments

Generally, the best backpacks feature dual or more compartments so that you can store your goods in a well-organized way to find out them later on when you open the backpack. With multiple compartments, you can store your clothing into the main compartment, bottles, and umbrella in one side compartment, shoes in the another and laptop in an extra laptop compartment. You can save your time searching for your items with this well-organized structure.

Lockable Zippers

If you want to store your goods in your backpack while traveling in a secure way, getting a back with a lockable security is the top priority. Hence, it is always recommended for you to get one with lockable zippers.

Front-loading Backpacks

With a front-loading backpack, you’d be able to open the backpack from the front view of the backpack and get access to every good inside it. The case is just the opposite and a lot more tough in case of a top-loading backpack where you have to access your items from a hole at the upper section. Hence, it is a better idea to go for a front-loading backpack to get access to every item effectively.
